What this letter is
The número de soporte (support number) is not a letter: it is a code printed on your TIE (tarjeta de identidad de extranjero, foreigner identity card) or on your certificado de registro de ciudadano de la UE (EU citizen registration certificate). It identifies the physical card, not you. That is why it differs from the NIE: the NIE stays with you forever, while the support number changes each time you renew or request a duplicate. Many online procedures ask for it to check that you have the document in hand and that it is valid.
How to read it: the key parts
| What you see on the document | What it means |
|---|---|
| NIE (letter X, Y or Z, 7 digits and a letter) | Your foreigner identity number. It is not the support number |
| Número de soporte en la TIE (front, E + 8 digits) | The card’s code, for example E87654321 |
| Número en el certificado de registro UE (back) | Typed with C in front and 8 digits, with leading zeros if needed |
| Fecha de validez (expiry date) | How long the card, and therefore that support number, is valid |
| Tipo de permiso (type of permit) | Which authorisation the card documents (temporary residence, long-term, EU family member…) |
| Zona de lectura mecánica (machine-readable zone, lines with «<<<» on the back) | Data for machines; don’t copy the support number from there |
What deadline you have
There is no deadline to meet here. What matters is that the support number is only valid while the card is in force. If you renew your TIE, the new card has a different number and the old one stops working in online procedures.
Example: you collect your new TIE on 5 October 2026. From that day, when Cl@ve or the Agencia Tributaria asks for the support number, you must use the one on the new card, even though your NIE is the same.
What you can do
| Option | When it makes sense | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Type the number with the correct letter | An online form asks for it | The system verifies your identity |
| Use another method (digital certificate, Cl@ve by another route) | The number doesn’t work or you have no card | You identify yourself without the support number |
| Renew or request a duplicate TIE | Card expired, lost or stolen | New card with a new support number; you pay the relevant fee |
| Go to an office in person | You can’t complete the procedure online | They identify you with the physical document |
What happens if you do nothing
If you can’t find the correct number, you won’t be able to complete online procedures that require it, such as Cl@ve registration or some Agencia Tributaria (Tax Agency) procedures. There is no fine or surcharge, but you’ll have to do it in person or with another identification system, which usually takes longer.
Common mistakes
- Typing the NIE where the support number is requested.
- Using the wrong letter: E on the TIE, C on the EU certificate.
- Copying the number from an old card after renewing.
- Not padding the EU certificate number with leading zeros.
- Copying the code from the machine-readable zone instead of the support number.
How to respond step by step
- Take the document you have in force (TIE or EU registration certificate).
- On the TIE, look on the front for the code starting with E and 8 digits.
- On the EU certificate, look for the number on the back and type it with C in front and 8 digits.
- Type it without spaces or hyphens, in capitals.
- If it gives an error, check it isn’t an expired card and try another identification system or go in person.
Cartamiga tip: take a photo of both sides of your TIE and keep it somewhere safe on your phone. It’ll save you hunting for the card every time a procedure asks for the support number.
